Useful Organizations for Computer Science Majors

Get involved! There are several organizations that undergraduate CS majors may join.

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM): UGA Chapter

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is the primarily professional organization for computer scientists in the United States.  The UGA Chapter of ACM meets regularly in Boyd. Benefits of joining ACM include a complimentary subscription to the ACM Communications publication as well as an acm.org email address.

 

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE): Student Branch

The UGA Branch of the IEEE was formed in 2013, whose mission is to spread knowledge of engineering and technology and to further the professional development of students.

 

Society for Information Management Systems (SMIS)

Computer Science majors are welcome to join the Society for Information Management Systems. SMIS hosts many events aimed at helping you get a good job with Georgia and national business, including sit-down dinners with recruiters from major IT and consulting firms. Reminder: you should dress in business attire (coat and tie) for SMIS functions.

 

Classic Hackers UGA Linux Users' Group (CHUGALUG)

Also, students may be interested in the UGA Linux enthusiasts' group CHUGALUG. CHUGALUG's membership includes students, faculty/staff, and Linux lovers from the Athens community. Linux beginners are welcome!

 

UGAHacks

UGAHacks is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that hosts an annual 72 hour programming event which takes place in Athens, Georgia at the University of Georgia. At our event you can network with different sponsors and participants, attend workshops to grow in your skills as a developer, and create a project that would be noteworthy to have on your resume. It is an event that provides an environment to explore something new while having fun doing it.
